When is the best time to take your first paragliding tandem flight ?

You've decided to book your first paragliding tandem flight, or you've received a gift voucher for an initiation, but you're wondering if there's a better time of year or season for your tandem paragliding flight ? Here's some advice we can give you on the best time to take to the skies with a professional team.

WHAT ARE THE WEATHER CONDITIONS REQUIRED FOR PARAGLIDING ?

Like all air sports and outdoor activities, paragliding is subject to the vagaries of meteorological and aerological conditions. However, paragliding is possible all year round ! Here's a non-exhaustive list of the main weather conditions required for paragliding, whatever the time of year:

A light to moderate wind, well-directed to ensure safe flying conditions. Beware, however, that the wind may be good on take-off, but not so good a few hundred meters above the ground on landing.

Good visibility conditions. If there's a thick cloud over the altitude range in which you're taking your first paragliding flight, then it's impossible for your instructor to take off, even with the best equipment ! However, if the cloud is overhead, it's not a problem.

No precipitation. Rain and snow are not favorable conditions for a pilot and passenger to fly in.

If all these conditions are met - which is often the case, whatever the time of year - then a paragliding experience is possible. You'll be able to fly like a bird and discover the joys of free flight and its sensations.

WHAT'S THE RIGHT SEASON FOR YOUR FIRST PARAGLIDING TANDEM FLIGHT IN FRANCE ?

Now that we've seen that you can enjoy your first paragliding Tandem flight all year round, let's take a closer look at which seasons are the best for paragliding.

Spring : this is the favorite season for paragliders, because it's when the aerological conditions are at their best and make for the most beautiful flights ! At this time of year, paragliding tandem flight in the mountains and on the plains offer superb flying conditions, often allowing you to gain altitude and flight time. You'll be able to fly over snow-covered peaks, mixed with the green landscapes of the plains!

Summer : This period is more or less favourable, depending on the location, allowing you to take advantage of the cooler temperatures at altitude. Heatwaves in the mountains offer paragliding tandem flight with fewer minutes of flight, but on the other hand gentler and calmer, due to the stability of the air mass, which prevents thermals from developing. However, this period is also very favourable for seaside flying, thanks to the sea breeze.

Autumn : Paragliding in autumn offers a breathtaking view of the reddish colors of the trees. Conditions can be relatively good, thanks to thermals and the sun warming the rock face, but temperatures can be a little cooler than in spring or summer.  However, the breathtaking view of the colors makes it a good season for a first paragliding experience.

Winter is the quietest season for paragliding tandem flight in the lowlands and lower mountains. However, if you go higher up into the mountains, you'll be able to experience some unforgettable flights, thanks to the many FFVL-approved paragliding schools to be found in virtually every resort. In fact, first-time paragliding flights (which can also be done on skis!) in resorts often offer breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks.

To sum up, we advise you to choose the period between April and September for your first paragliding experience, regardless of the flying site you choose in France. In ski resorts or high mountains, this window will be wider, with magnificent flights thanks to the snow-covered mountains, but a little shorter in winter, and more classic flights during the rest of the season.

NB: Despite the weather information you may find, we always advise you to check with the school that will be carrying out the flight to find out whether the conditions on the day are good or not. Indeed, you may have the impression that the conditions are not good, but the experience and analysis of the instructors is often much better than the information you could get from the classic weather sites, and you could therefore miss out on a great experience. It's the same the other way round: bright sunshine and no wind where you are doesn't necessarily mean that flying conditions are good. If in doubt, don't hesitate to contact the school where you'll be taking your first flight.
