Paragliding : the complete guide to flying

paragliding in flight

If you're new to paragliding, or if you'd like to take up the sport, you may be faced with a whole host of questions. Indeed, the world of paragliding can be very confusing for a beginner, as it's complex and wide-ranging. But don't worry, it's easy to get to grips with the ins and outs of this popular aerial sport. To help you out, we've put together a quick rundown of the questions most commonly asked by pilots new to free flight.

CAN PARAGLIDING BE PRACTISED WITHOUT A LICENCE ?

Paragliding is an accessible aerial activity, but it is essential to know the basic rules. In France, no license is required for solo paragliding, but we strongly advise you not to try it without going to a paragliding school, so you know when to take to the skies alone. There are a number of certificates that can be acquired after appropriate training, which attest to your level. These certificates will open the doors to training so that you can take people with you under your wing, or take part in competitions, for example.

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM WEIGHT FOR PARAGLIDING ?

Weight plays a crucial role in paragliding. Each glider has a recommended maximum weight for its pilot. Generally speaking, the maximum weight is around 100-120 kg. Respecting these limits is crucial for safety and optimum control during flight.

Please note that these limits are not fixed, and heavier pilots can fly, but they will need to use an adapted paraglider to guarantee safe flights.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR TFW FOR PARAGLIDING ?

The T.F.W. (Total Flying Weight) is the sum of the pilot's weight plus the weight of all his equipment and any accessories he may bring with him on the flight. In simple terms, to calculate the TFW, you simply weigh all the equipment and add it to the pilot's weight.

This information is essential for choosing the right paraglider for your flying profile.

WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PARAGLIDING ?

Paragliding is accessible to almost everyone. However, certain conditions may apply. Pregnant women, for example, are generally advised not to fly. People who are not physically fit enough to take off and land safely are also advised not to practice paragliding. However, you should be aware that children and people with reduced mobility are welcome to take a first flight, provided they have suitable equipment and an experienced pilot.

WHERE CAN YOU PARAGLIDE WITH MAXIMUM SAFETY ?

There are many superb sites for paragliding, often in the mountains or near the coast. It's important to choose sites that are recognized for their ease of use, and often managed by local clubs or the FFVL (French free-flight federation). These sites offer ideal conditions for beginners and experienced pilots alike.

These paragliding sites generally have wide, even take-off areas, and the right meteorological and aerological conditions for flying. Before you set off, don't hesitate to get in touch with local pilots, who will be able to tell you all about the site's accessibility !

PREPARING MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY FOR YOUR FIRST PARAGLIDING FLIGHT

Mental and physical preparation is essential. This includes a good night's sleep before the flight, a healthy diet and a positive frame of mind. Familiarization with the equipment and the flying process beforehand also helps to reduce anxiety. Don't hesitate to use the psychic technique to find out if you're fit to fly! If in the run-up to the flight you detect red lights that tell you not to go flying, then listen to them and pass!

There will be better conditions another day, so you can enjoy your flight in complete peace of mind and in good conditions !
