Paragliding certification : is it compulsory and how do I get it ?
Paragliding, an aerial discipline that offers incomparable freedom in the air, raises many questions, not least about the need for a license to practice it. In this article, we'll explore the regulations surrounding paragliding licences and the steps you need to take to obtain one.
PARAGLIDING LICENCE: IS IT COMPULSORY TO FLY ?
Paragliding is an activity that combines adrenalin and contemplation. But do you need a licence to take to the skies ? The answer varies from country to country. In some countries, such as France, although it is not compulsory to fly, a licence is strongly recommended for safety and insurance reasons.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO FLY WITH A PARAGLIDING LICENCE ?
Flying with a paragliding licence is not just an administrative formality, it's above all a question of safety. The licence guarantees that the pilot has the necessary skills to handle different situations in flight. What's more, in many countries, having a licence is essential for taking out suitable insurance and complying with local regulations.
PARAGLIDING CERTIFICATION: HOW DO YOU GET IT ?
Obtaining a paragliding licence involves a process of learning and validating skills. Here's a quick rundown of the different paragliding licences available, and their associated levels.
The different levels of paragliding certification
1. Initial certification : This first level covers the basics of flight and safety. Once obtained, it certifies that the pilot knows how to take off and land safely on a known site in stable aerological conditions. Relatively easy to obtain if you're serious about paragliding, all you need to do is pass a multiple-choice test, and validate a simple flight situation in front of a certified instructor.
2. Pilot's licence : This attests to more advanced mastery and autonomy in flight. Generally speaking, this certificate is defined as proof that the pilot can manage on different sites and in varied aerological conditions. To obtain this certificate, all you need to do is pass a multiple-choice test, then take part in a variety of flight situations with an instructor who will certify whether or not the pilot has ensured his or her safety.
3. Confirmed pilot licence : This higher level confirms significant expertise and experience. More complicated to obtain, this certificate gives pilots access to competitions, and entitles them to register for tandem pilot training, or to take part in federal or professional instructor training. To obtain it, pilots have to pass a multiple-choice test, answer open-ended questions on various paragliding topics, and complete a flight test covering several kilometers.
