Windsocks are visual devices for determining wind direction and measuring wind speed. Attached to the top of a mast, they are made of strong, flexible textiles to guarantee superior resistance to weather, humidity and UV rays.
Often made up of 5 rings of alternating color (3 red and 2 white), they are also more rarely found entirely in orange. This color is generally intended for African and Nordic countries. It guarantees perfect visibility in the particular conditions of these dry or often snowy regions.
STNA (Service Technique de la Navigation Aérienne) windsocks are approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Like all windsocks, they indicate wind direction and measure wind speed.
Used mainly at airports and airfields, they are made from high-quality fabric to resist humidity, wind and UV rays.
Placed at the edge of runways, they provide pilots with vital information on ground conditions during take-off and landing.
To be STNA-approved, a windsock must meet a number of criteria. It must feature the standard red and white colors, be guyed and be attached to the top of a 7.40 m tilt mast, itself STNA-approved.
Windsocks come in a range of sizes to suit different activities and locations. Windsocks with a diameter of 30 cm and a length of 1m to 1.80m are ideal for use on beaches or terraces, for example. On the other hand, they are unsuitable for heliports or airfields, where a much larger size is needed to be visible from higher up.
Several textiles are also available. Air sleeves, for example, can be made from Ripstop. This hard-wearing, waterproof fabric offers good value for money, and is perfectly suited to places where conditions are not too harsh. However, for more extreme conditions and greater resistance and longevity, you'll need to opt for high-grammage polyester windsocks.
