Calypso: Aim for progression
The Calypso is a light and easy intermediate wing for beginners and recreational pilots looking for a wing that inspires confidence, is easy to carry and fly, and offers a variety of Cross possibilities. It has been developed from the ground up with lightness in mind. It is not an existing model in the range that has been lightened. The result of specific development, the Calypso was designed to be a lightweight intermediate.
Serene, playful riding
The Calypso has exceptional passive stability and offers consistent feedback so you can better understand the aerology to maximize your enjoyment and performance. Brake pressure is smooth, precise and progressive. The wing is also forgiving if you are less active. But above all, the Calypso is great fun to fly and very easy to handle.
Starting from scratch to develop the Calypso enabled us to design an internal structure and an optimized line cascade layout to save weight, without compromising other aspects of the design. As a result, the Calypso offers very balanced flying characteristics, not just light weight.
Designed for lightness
Starting from scratch to develop the Calypso, we designed an internal structure and optimized line cascade layout to save weight, without compromising other aspects of the design. As a result, the Calypso offers very balanced flying characteristics, not just light weight.
Extended weight range
Calypso is certified with an extended weight range for greater flexibility of use. Flying in the middle of the normal weight range, low-flying pilots will discover a wing that's easy, fun and climbs easily. With a higher wing loading in the extended weight range, experienced pilots who want to use it for hobby flying can enjoy dynamic flight in stronger conditions, and save weight by flying a smaller glider.
Designer's info
Test pilot Idris Birch explains the Calypso development process:
"With the Calypso, we decided to design a lightweight wing from scratch, rather than make a lightweight version of a wing in the range. This gave us more flexibility in adjusting the wing's handling and stability, to meet the requirements of both recreational and rando pilots."
We've worked hard to achieve the right compromise between safety and fun - handling is a little more dynamic than a typical first wing, but passive safety is still exceptional and the wing won't surprise the pilot. In addition to the flying characteristics, we also wanted to make take-off as easy as possible. The wing rises quickly, effortlessly and without overshooting, making take-off easy even in the most unfavorable places. As always with lightweight wings, we spent a lot of time optimizing the internal structure to reduce weight as much as possible. What's more, we were able to increase the number of high lines without increasing the total line volume, which increases stability without compromising performance.
