Avid GIN: Pure thermal pleasure
Gin's Avid is a high-flying paraglider specializing in cross-country flying. It boasts exceptional qualities for this type of flying, such as glide ratio, stability and feedback.
Piloting the Avid
Its dynamic profile gives it excellent capacity in thermals, whatever the flying conditions. It combines stability and maneuverability to perfection. Gin's EN B wing transmits sensations in the air mass to help you make the most of the day's conditions. At the controls, you benefit from authority and precision. Feedback from the brakes is direct. In tight turns or flatter, it remains well balanced.
Its inherent stability in pitch and roll allows you to maximize your ascent with effortless fun. Gin's Avid bites enthusiastically into the slightest ascents, but quickly stabilizes overhead. Collapses are rare in flight, and even if they do occur, reopening is stress-free. And even on windier, more thermal take-offs, the wing tends to stay anchored overhead.
The Avid's glide ratio is among the best in its class, and it stands up to all the wings in the top category. 3rd generation EPT (Equalized Pressure Technology) ensures that the wing's internal pressure remains as constant as possible, meaning that the wing's shape is maintained and aerodynamic efficiency improved. The Avid's profile and aspect ratio are derived from the Explorer 2, a wing with an excellent track record in its class.
Robust, lightweight fabric
The Avid's fabric is the result of shared knowledge between GIN and its technical partner Myungjin. Myungjin MJ40MF and MJ32MF fabrics withstand harsh and abrasive environments. After a long development process, this fabric was introduced for the first time in the brand's two-seater sails, and has proved its excellent qualities.
Despite its heavier fabric, the Avid remains relatively light thanks to its construction. It skilfully combines new-formula plastic ribs and Nitinol (Nickel-titanium) thread. This ensures greater dimensional stability, enhanced performance and more compact bending.
Its C-lift control system
Avid features a smart elevator with control handle and Harken pulley. This ensures very smooth operation. If you prefer a more conventional elevator, the B/C line is removable. Push the half-bar of your speed-bar, take the elevator and enjoy the view! It's the ideal introduction to flying with rear risers!
From designer Gin Seok Song
"The Avid is largely inspired by the GIN LAB wind tunnel research we are conducting in partnership with a Korean university. It's a major project that has already led to a number of ideas that are reflected in the production wings. This work has helped a lot in optimizing the tension of the wing, which for the pilot means a better climb in thermals and more refined piloting. The Avid's behavior remains well balanced and efficient across a wide range of bank angles and wing loads. It gives a feeling of stability and control, while providing good information on what the air is doing. This is what we consider to be one of the wing's main advantages, and it translates into a low workload for the pilot. There's an extra pulley for even smoother operation and a toggle for easier control. We also use new-formula plastic rushes on the leading edge for greater dimensional stability, and Nitinol thread on the upper surface towards the rear. Nitinol supports the trailing edge perfectly and precisely, while reducing weight and volume when folded.
We've also been working closely with Myungjin for some time to develop robust fabrics with the precise characteristics we need. In wings such as our two-seater Fuse, we've found that the longevity of the fabric is excellent, even after hard seasons of tandem flying around the world.
The Avid is simply our answer to pilots who wanted to experience our highest-performing wing in the EN B category, but whose top priority is not to minimize weight."
