The essential element of paragliding: The Carabiner
The carabiner is one of the most common and essential accessories for paragliding. Its main function is to connect the harness to the glider and/or the reserve parachute. They can be either flexible or rigid, self-closing, screw-type, etc..
To be used, the carabiner must be able to withstand a load equivalent to the strength of the anchor points on which they are mounted.
Like the vast majority of carabiners used on harnesses, Kortel's Auto Carabiners are self-locking, aluminum-alloy carabiners. They are lighter, easier to handle and the ideal solution for free flight. But their design is closely linked to that of climbing and mountaineering carabiners, and incorporates all their functions.
Features of the Kortel Auto Carabiner
This self-locking carabiner features an angled opening that makes it much easier to attach straps. It is optimized for a width of 40mm.
Its main axle is designed to withstand a working load of 2000 kg. Its transverse axis withstands a working load of 1000 kg.
Fatigue phenomenon
Aluminum carabiners are sensitive to fatigue failure. When paragliding, you are constantly suspended from the connectors, but the load is not constant. Indeed, in flight, you are subjected to a multitude of lightenings and accelerations that vary the load applied to these connectors.
This is known as the "fatigue" phenomenon, as the connectors are alternately loaded and unloaded.
The Kortel Auto carabiner has a maximum lifespan of 5 years or 500 hours of use.
Caution: Do not use these carabiners in tandem flight on the "spreader-wing " link or on any link connected to the tandem reserve parachute.
