Description
The Purpose of Alti Vario GPS in Paragliding
These instruments aim to enhance your performance in flight by providing real-time data necessary to achieve your goals. In paragliding, you will encounter situations where thermals are weak, or you need to know your ground speed to determine if you can venture away from your landing site. All this information can be easily obtained using the tools at your disposal.

The Variometer
For us paragliders, the variometer is probably the most useful basic instrument! It provides information on our climb rate or sink rate. This is extremely useful in paragliding to determine if we can stay in a zone, efficiently utilize thermals, or even detect and remain in an ascending area.
How Does a Paragliding Variometer Work?
There are two systems of variometers. The first uses a pressure system, essentially a barometer, to determine climb rate through pressure differences. The second system uses an accelerometer to measure vertical speed changes and translates these into climb or sink rates.
How is the Data from a Paragliding Variometer Interpreted?
Variometers translate climb or sink rate measurements into audio signals. A beep or a series of beeps. Here’s how these signals are typically interpreted:
- During a climb phase, as the climb rate increases, the beeps get closer together, and the pitch becomes higher.
- During a descent phase, the sound is a continuous tone that becomes lower as the sink rate increases.
The Altimeter
Unlike the variometer, the altimeter is an altitude and height indicator.
Often coupled with the variometer, the altimeter in paragliding requires a display for the data to be readable by the pilot. This will allow you to know your altitude (height relative to a reference, usually sea level) or your height (relative to a point, the ground, the takeoff or landing based on your needs). Again, it is usually pressure-based that altimeters operate, although there are other measurement methods, often less effective and precise.
GPS
An already well-known instrument, the GPS becomes interesting and useful from the first flights in paragliding. The Alti Vario GPS provides all the necessary data to reach a precise point, know your ground speed, define a route, and know and avoid airspaces, etc. Typically more expensive, these instruments are rather intended for experienced pilots.
