Description

Paragliding gliders EN B

Paragliding is an exciting aerial activity, offering freedom and adrenalin. EN B paragliders, designed for intermediate pilots, combine safety and performance. They are ideal for those looking to progress after mastering the basics.

What are the technical characteristics of EN B glider?

EN B paragliders are distinguished by their balanced design. They offer improved handling and better air penetration than EN A gliders, thanks to a more efficient aerodynamic design. Compared with EN A paragliders, EN B gliders have an aspect ratio ranging from 4.9 to 5.8, or even 6.07 for the Gin Explorer 2, which is the queen of its class. EN B paragliders also have a generally smaller surface area for an equivalent TFW than EN A glider.

EN B paraglider for what type of pilot and what type of flying?

EN B paraglider offer the best balance between performance and safety. With this in mind, manufacturers have designed EN B gliders for pilots who wish to progress, or who wish to evolve calmly without any particular quest for performance.

This category is so broad that you'll find a whole host of paragliders designed for hike-and-fly, site flying, cross-country and even acrobatic training!

How to choose between B-, B or B+ gliders?

You'll find plenty to talk about in this category, which over time has been split into 3 sub-categories. Here's a brief overview of the essential notions to remember:

EN B- : Ideal stepping stone to the EN B category, these paragliders have a stable behavior reminiscent of EN A wings, but with better performance. With aspect ratios generally between 4.9 and 5.1, these wings are generally intended for recreational pilots with little flight volume.

EN B: The gliders in this sub-category have an aspect ratio generally between 5.2 and 5.6. It's when you fly these paragliders that you start to feel more precision at the controls, better glide and a satisfactory stability-to-performance ratio. These wings are aimed at a whole range of pilots with very different objectives. From pilots with a reasonable volume of flying who want to enjoy themselves, to pilots who want to do their first cross-country flights, there are many gliders on offer to suit all pilot profiles.

EN B+: This category is beginning to be aimed at more experienced pilots whose objectives are generally distance flying and possibly first competitions. The glider's aspect ratio is between 5.6 and 6.07, giving it good penetration in the air, better maximum speed and optimal maneuverability in thermals. On the other hand, the reactions of this category of gliders are more lively, and require more experience.

What are the criteria for EN B- B mid or B+ classification?

Even if there are no well-defined criteria for sub-categorizing EN B wings, here are the clues that lead paragliders to know how to categorize an EN B wing:

- The homologation report: this gives a factual indication of how many and which criteria have been upgraded to B at the time of testing.

- Designers' experience and feedback from development pilots: they are the first to know from their experience what type of pilot the wing is intended for.

- Pilot feedback: once the wing is on the market, it's possible to gauge its real value.

- The glider's characteristics: these generally give a clue as to how the wing will perform, with aspect ratio and cell count at the top of the list.
