Tandem Harnesses
Description
Tandem harnesses are paragliding harnesses specifically designed for tandem or two-seater flying. It's worth noting that conventional harnesses can also be used for this type of flight. However, these are ill-suited to this type of flying, and have a number of disadvantages for both pilot and passenger.
The Paragliding Tandem Seat for the pilot
These harnesses are generally designed with a leg spacing that allows the pilot not to be hindered by the passenger in front of him. The reserve parachute pocket is usually located on the back of the pilot's harness. On most models, a protective layer, usually made of foam, is located under the buttocks and thighs. This serves to protect the pilot.
A special feature of pilot harnesses is the large rescue pocket, as the rescue is for the entire crew. This means a maximum Takeoff Weight of up to 225kg.
Depending on the harness, the rescue risers may be integrated directly into the shoulder straps to facilitate handling and prevent the risers from getting mixed up with the rest of the equipment.
Tandem paragliding harness for the passenger
For the passenger in a paragliding tandem, there are several types of seat, just like the classic harness. Designed with a planchette or cuissarde seat, these harnesses generally come in a wide range of sizes and weights to accommodate the widest possible range of passengers.
Protection is generally provided by a subcutaneous airbag, but foam bags are also available.
Children's harnesses
As the title suggests, these small-format harnesses allow you to take children with you on flights. They are specially adapted to their small size. They often come in 2 sizes, to keep pace with children's age.
Children's harnesses are often combined with the use of specific spreaders for their smaller size.
What additional equipment do I need for tandem flying?
As with conventional harnesses, you'll need carabiners to complete your equipment (usually supplied with tandem harnesses). In addition, you'll need tandem-specific equipment such as spreaders, rescue risers and a tandem rescue parachute adapted to the weight of the entire crew.
How to choose your tandem harness?
It's important to choose your tandem harness according to the type of flying you do. In addition, you need to take into account the safety and comfort provided by the harness. All these indicators will help you make a consistent choice.
How much do tandem harnesses cost?
Prices for tandem harnesses vary widely. They depend on the type of harness and other design parameters. But generally speaking, they range from around 300 to 700 euros.
